Shaare Zedek Physician Named Ministry of Health Chief of Staff

Dr. Sefi Mendelovich, a senior physician in the Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, has been named Chief of Staff for the Director-General of Israel’s Ministry of Health. While serving in the Ministry, where is is “on loan,” he will also retain his position at the Hospital.

For the past several months, Dr. Mendelovich has been an assistant to Shaare Zedek Director-General Prof. Jonathan Halevy and was also a medical adviser to outgoing Health Ministry Director-General Prof. Arnon Afek. He is set to begin at the ministry’s headquarters on July 1.

“Sefi is a rising star in Israeli medicine,” said Prof. Halevy. “He is an excellent physician and administrator, honest, devoted and a man of values.”

Dr. Mendelovich is a physician in an elite reserve unit of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He also founded the prestigious Inbar program, which is developing a future generation of leaders for Israel’s medical system.

Dr. Mendelovich recently returned from Kathmandu, Nepal, where he was a member of the IDF Field Hospital team that treated victims of that country’s massive earthquake in April. He was one of ten doctors and nurses from Shaare Zedek to be part of that delegation, which also included Dr. Ofer Merin, Deputy Director-General and Head of the Trauma Unit at Shaare Zedek Medical Center who also served as Director of the IDF Field Hospital and Director-General Prof. Halevy, who was Director of Internal Medicine. Mendelovich was also part of the IDF team that established a Field Hospital in the Philippines in November 2013 after it was devastated by Typhoon Haiyam.

Shaare Zedek Doctor Develops Scale to Rate Cancer Drugs

Prof. Nathan Cherny, Director of Cancer Pain and Palliative Care Unit at Shaare Zedek Medical Center’s Medical Oncology Department and one of Israel’s leading oncologists, has developed a “tool” to help physicians determine the most effective cancer treatments and medications.

The tool, which includes scores for 70 different cancer drugs, has been published by the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) and is called the “ESMO Magnitude and Clinical Benefit Scale” (MCBS).

“While it is known that the value of any new treatment is determined by the magnitude of its clinical benefit against its cost, to date there has not been a standard tool for grading such magnitude,” said Prof. Cherny, who formulated the idea some years ago. “Many modern cancer drugs are of very little benefit to patients,” he explained. “More and more medicines have been going on to the market with lower and lower levels of benefit . . . The ESMO-MCBS offers a rational, structured and consistent approach to “stratify” a drug’s clinically meaningful benefit.”

ESMO intends to apply the scale prospectively to new anti-cancer drugs that will be approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Drugs obtaining the highest scores on the scale will be highlighted in the ESMO Clinical Practice Guidelines, with the hope that they will be rapidly made available by health authorities across the European Union.

Since 1997 Prof. Cherny has served on the research steering committee of the European Association of Palliative Care. In 1999 he established the European Society for Medical Oncology working group for the integration of oncology and palliative care. He led the ESMO initiative to develop policies on the role of the oncologist in palliative care, oncology training for medical oncologists more >
