Earn a Tax Deduction for 2015

You only have until December 31 to make your year-end tax-deductible gift to The American Committee for Shaare Zedek!

If you’re 70 ½ and older you can transfer up to $100,000 directly from your IRA to The American Committee for Shaare Zedek, thanks to the “Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act” of 2015,” just signed by the President.

If you qualify and take advantage of this charitable gifting opportunity, the amount gifted to charity will not be included in your gross income.  Consequently, you will not be entitled to a charitable income tax deduction.  However, because the amount distributed from the IRA is not included in your income, for tax purposes, it is treated as if the amount were included in your income and then you received an offsetting, dollar for dollar, charitable contribution income tax deduction.  For high and midlevel income taxpayers, this treatment may be far superior than taking a taxable distribution from your IRA and giving the distributed amount to charity because of the limitations on itemized deductions applicable to such taxpayers.

Alternatively, for taxpayers who utilize the standard deduction, the direct contribution may also be superior than receiving a taxable IRA distribution and giving the distributed amount to charity because, with the standard deduction, you do not get a deduction for your gifts to charity.

The favorable tax treatment given to IRA direct charitable gifts applies only to outright charitable gifts and not to amounts used to fund a charitable lead or remainder trust.

If you are at least 70½ in 2015, please consider making a tax-free gift from your IRA in the coming days.  Please check with your individual tax advisor to determine whether this is appropriate for you.

Shaare Zedek Marks 44 Years of Partnership With USAID/ASHA

Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center marked over four decades of partnership with USAID (the United States Agency for International Development) in December as the Agency was added to the Healers Wall at the Hospital.  The Healers Wall pays tribute to those who have played leading roles in the Hospital’s development.

The American Schools & Hospital Abroad (ASHA) program within USAID supports institutions like Shaare Zedek which share America’s vision of civility, humanitarian caring and social progress. Jonathan Kamin, Deputy Director of the USAID WBG Mission in Tel Aviv, said USAID warmly welcomes the partnership with Shaare Zedek and the model it represents for advanced medicine and its contribution to coexistence and declared “we look forward to continue to have the Hospital as our supporters and friends.”

Professor Jonathan Halevy, Shaare Zedek’s Director-General, saluted the Agency saying, “the projects which you have supported are those that directly enable us to significantly advance the level of care.” He also noted the shared vision between the Medical Center and the United States Government, saying “In a mixed city such as Jerusalem, we pride ourselves on offering a unique service to all the residents of this region and we firmly believe that hospitals can serve to truly advance peace.”

Rabbi Michael Melchior, Israel’s Former Minister for Diaspora, also attended the ceremony.  He described Shaare Zedek as “an oasis of practicing the ideals of a shared society.”

Upon conclusion of the ceremony, the members of the USAID delegation toured the Surgical Operating Complex, led by Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Professor Uzi Beller and Director of Anesthesiology and Operating Room Services, Professor Yaakov Gozal. The new da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, which is being purchased with funds provided by USAID this year, will allow Shaare more >
