Since 1902, Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem has been providing top-level medical care for the people of Jerusalem, responding to the needs of the city’s uniquely diverse population. Many years ago, a particularly appreciative patient referred to Shaare Zedek as “The Hospital with a Heart,” and this endearing term has been adopted by many of the thousands of patients who enter through our doors each year.

Shaare Zedek is named after the inspiring biblical term “Gates of Righteousness.” Thoughtfully combining a healthy blend of advanced medicine with compassionate patient care, the Hospital has become recognized as a highly sought after medical provider throughout Jerusalem, Israel and the broader medical community.

Shaare Zedek Medical Center is located on an 11-acre campus directly opposite Mount Herzl, making it Jerusalem’s only major, centrally located Hospital.

The first three floors of the Hospital’s main building house the most vital services, including: our operating theaters, ER, the pharmacy and our medical and sterile supplies. These units are all intentionally located underground to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of all life-saving activities even in the event of war or hostile attack of any kind.

What makes Shaare Zedek unique is its ability to serve as a model for social co-existence while also strictly adhering to the traditions of Jewish Law.

In 2015, Shaare Zedek opened its Next Generation Building which serves as a comprehensive response to medical care for children from infancy through adolescence. The ten-story building houses the Wilf Children’s Hospital, including the Glaubach Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, the Huberfeld Birthing Center, the Huberfeld Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Nagel Family In-Patient Pavilion, the Friedman Family Out-Patient Pavilion as well as the Zusman Department for Pediatric Neurology, Rothberg Department of Pediatric Nephrology, cardiology, urology, rheumatology, pulmonology, hematology, gastroenterology, infectious disease and neonatology. The Next Generation Building also includes the expansion of the Hospital’s maternity facilities, currently among the most active in the Western world, with 22,400 births in 2016.

In 2012, Bikur Cholim Hospital was taken over by Shaare Zedek and now bears the name Shaare Zedek Medical Center – City Center Campus. 73% of its workforce was retained, the facility in downtown Jerusalem was repaired and the city’s nearby large, observant neighborhoods as well as the Old City continue to have a medical facility within walking distance.

Under unfortunate circumstances, the hospital has gained vast experience in dealing with diverse types of trauma and emergency medicine by treating casualties of terrorism in recent years. During this period, the hospital strengthened its historic relationship with the Israel Defense Forces. Today Shaare Zedek serves as a peacetime military hospital, treating more than 12,000 soldiers a year. The Hospital also collaborates with the IDF on emergency preparedness and is the designated regional center for the treatment of victims of chemical and biological attack.

A highly esteemed academic and research institution, Shaare Zedek Medical Center serves as a teaching hospital, fully academically affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem.
