A Beautiful Partnership
Since its inception in 1947, USAID’s American Schools and Hospitals Abroad program has epitomized the generosity of United States citizens as it encourages other countries to strive to reach American standards and helps them achieve success. This program provides assistance to schools, libraries and medical centers outside the United States that serve as study and demonstration centers for American ideas and practices. ASHA’s grants help these institutions train future leaders in a wide variety of disciplines, support local and regional infrastructure to foster development and cultivate positive relationships and mutual understanding among citizens of the United States and other nations.
Shaare Zedek Medical Center has proven to be just such an institution. The Hospital does not receive any support from the Israeli government and therefore relies on the generosity of its donors from around the world and Israel to provide the means to sustain Shaare Zedek’s continuous commitment to excellence. One of the Hospital’s most loyal contributors has been USAID/ASHA which, through its competitive grant awards, has allowed Shaare Zedek to be a leader in fostering medical development, while cultivating positive relationships and mutual understanding between peoples.
USAID/ASHA staff regularly visit Shaare Zedek and see the impact that the ASHA-funded equipment has made to the Hospital’s ability to serve the needs of Jerusalem’s uniquely diverse population. USAID/ASHA has undertaken a number of projects within Shaare Zedek, including rebuilding and expanding the ER, providing mammography equipment in the new Diagnostic Breast Health Center, and sponsoring an angiography system, new operating tables, an anesthesia system and, most recently, a Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. Through these and other projects, USAID/ASHA has made an immeasurable, positive contribution to the top-quality care the Hospital offers to its patients.
