Border police officer Shani-Lee Shtrechman, who was injured on Friday, March 6 when a Palestinian terrorist ran her and five other policewomen down at the Shimon HaTzadik Light Rail station in Jerusalem, had a visit from some of her fellow officers while recovering at Shaare Zedek.  On her cast, a message to the terrorists says, “I have no other country!” with drawing of the Star of David. “We love our country very much, and we will defend it day and night,” Shani-Lee says.

Super Bowl XLIX Halftime with Shaare Zedek #baskinthecool

We know that the commercials are almost as exciting as the game itself for many people watching the Super Bowl. So at halftime, we urge you to “tune in” to the Kosher Halftime Show, hosted by Jewish radio icon Nachum Segal,, to see our commercial. #baskinthecool

The Kosher Halftime Show will feature Soulfarm, led by Grammy Award winning guitarist C Lanzbom and lead singer Noah Solomon Chase. Together with drummer Ben Antelis and Grammy Award winning bassist Mitch Friedman, Soulfarm will play three songs, including the debut of “Shalom Lach Eretz Nehederet.” This Hebrew song is a remake about wandering away from and then returning to Israel.

Nachum’s trademark humor and commentary on the Jewish music scene and Jewish community life will provide background for the entire program.

Shaare Zedek Highlights 2014

2014 saw unprecedented growth at Shaare Zedek Medical Center. We welcomed new, first rate physicians and expanded the nursing staff, incorporated advanced medical equipment, opened new departments and clinics, continued our building momentum and received a permit to expand the Hospital even further.

This past year we successfully treated a record number of patients – a 10% increase from the previous year.  Our Obstetrics and Gynecology Wing continues to break records and on the last day of the year we delivered our 22,417th birth, an unparalleled number in Israel and throughout the western world (15,890 were born in our main campus and the remainder at the Shaare Zedek City Center Campus, formerly known as Bikur Cholim).

Jules Hosanski Sterile Supply Unit Opens with the Support of USAID/ASHA

With the support of USAID/ASHA and the estate of Jules Hosanski, a life-long resident of France, Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center has opened the Jules Hosanski Sterile Supply Unit.

Shaare Zedek was honored to host His Excellency Patrick Maisonnave, the Ambassador of France to Israel, to mark the occasion.

More than 17 million NIS was invested in the Jules Hosanski Sterile Supply Unit, which integrates robotic technology and advanced sterilization equipment to offer a high level of patient safety. Shaare Zedek sterilizes over one million pieces of equipment annually, including those used in over 26,000 surgical procedures. The department is the most advanced of its kind in Israel.

Ambassador Maisonnave said that he was humbled by the recognition that ordinary citizens could play such an important role in the lives of the people of Israel. He complimented Shaare Zedek saying, “We are truly grateful for what you do here each and every day and for this we thank you.”

Shaare Zedek Ready as Snowstorm Approaches Jerusalem

Shaare Zedek Medical Center is gearing up for the approaching snowstorm, expected to hit Jerusalem,  beginning Tuesday evening, January 6, 2015 and continuing on Wednesday, January 7.

The Hospital, which delivered 150 babies during the December 2013 blizzard and cared for a large number of people who suffered from storm-related injuries, in addition to conducting “business as usual,” is initiating procedures for the storm which may bring snow accumulations that can equal last year’s 20 inches.

Uri Schwarz, Shaare Zedek’s Director of Resource Development, said, “On Wednesday, 7 am, the nurses will start to work in 12 hour shifts instead of the usual eight and the Hospital will provide transportation for staff based on all main arteries being accessible for vans with snow chains.” In addition, maintenance teams will work to ensure that access routes within the Hospital campus are kept clear and will coordinate efforts with the police and rescue services to keep access routes to Shaare Zedek as clear as possible.

In December 2013, many staff members rode out the three-day storm at Shaare Zedek, working multiple shifts and taking breaks whenever they could.

Single Incision Lung Surgery is First for Israel

For the first time in Israel, a patient’s malignant lung tumor has been removed by Dr. Danny Fink (pictured) and Dr. Faras Abu Acher at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem with just a single, four centimeter incision in the lower lobe between the ribs.  This procedure, called a “thoracoscopy,” is performed with a tiny video camera and surgical implements being inserted through the opening and usually requires several incisions.  This new technique was developed by a Spanish surgeon, Dr. Diego Gonzales, who visited Shaare Zedek a year ago and taught the method to these doctors.  Dr. Fink explained that the single incision surgery minimizes pain and scarring, as well as speeds recovery.  The patient was discharged just four days later.

Shaare Zedek to Train Ethiopian Doctors

Four senior physicians from Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem recently toured Ethiopia as part of a program initiated by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) to help strengthen the Ethiopian health care system.

The delegation, comprised of Shaare Zedek Director-General Prof. Jonathan Halevy, Deputy Director-General Dr. Ofer Merin, Head of the Pediatric Wing Prof. Yechiel Schlesinger and pediatric cardiologist Dr. Danny Fink, met with representatives of the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, hospital directors and deans of medical schools to familiarize themselves with the health care system in the developing country and with its needs.

“We realized that the best help we can provide will be in the form of training,” says Dr. Merin. “There are approximately 2,000 physicians in Ethiopia, a country with over 90 million residents. Less than 900 of those physicians are specialists. By comparison, in Israel there are about 30,000 physicians treating eight million residents”.

According to the agreement reached between the delegation and the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, Ethiopian physicians who will train in Shaare Zedek Medical Center for a year will be acknowledged by the local institutions as specialists in their field of training. Shaare Zedek will accept three physicians each year for this purpose. The list of medical fields which will offer training in this capacity will be set in the upcoming weeks.

Two physicians already underwent training in pediatric cardiology last year as part of a pilot for the program. “They since returned to their country but we’ve maintained regular contact with them and advise them as need be,” says Merin, and adds that “except for the training, it’s important to establish a long-term connection that will provide them with support, even after their year of training and which more >
