“In Shaare Zedek I Received the Highest Level of Treatment”

Twenty-five days after an assassination attempt nearly claimed his life, Rabbi Yehuda Glick was released from Shaare Zedek Medical Center on November 24. During a press conference Rabbi Glick shared, “The fact that I am sitting here today and speaking with you is a sign of the immense gratitude that I owe to Hashem . . . in Shaare Zedek I received the highest level of treatment. I received sincerity,  I received caring, I received people who didn’t sleep a second until they had the answers… From the nurses to the medical students and national service workers to the maintenance teams and security officers, my care was always administered with love and joy.

Dr. Ofer Merin, Shaare Zedek Deputy Director General and Director of Trauma Medicine, said to Rabbi Glick, “I don’t know if you can appreciate how much emotion we feel that someone who arrived here in such a serious state is leaving in such a condition today. This success is largely due to the remarkable cooperation between the first aid responders and the surgical teams that gave us the ability to come to this day.” We wish Rabbi Glick a quick and complete recovery.”

Terror Attacks Send More Victims to Shaare Zedek

Shaare Zedek’s Weinstock Department of Emergency Medicine on the Fanya Gottesfeld Heller Floor (2nd Floor, located underground) is Jerusalem’s busiest ER, treating 135,500 patients so far this year – an increase of 6,500 over last year’s record total – and most of those wounded by the recent spate of attacks.

In and around Jerusalem through the past few weeks, Palestinians have launched terror attacks against Israelis with firearms, axes, knives and by running them down with their vehicles.  As Jerusalem’s busiest and most respected emergency and trauma center, the renowned “Hospital with a Heart” has successfully treated  victims of every incident, including Rabbi Yehuda Glick, who was shot at point blank range nearly a month ago and was saved by the doctors, nurses and staff of Shaare Zedek Medical Center.

Fanya Gottesfeld Heller, who dedicated the 2nd Floor in 2003, was honored by The American Committee for Shaare Zedek Medical Center on Wednesday evening, November 19, along with her children Ben and Beth Heller and Dr. Jacqueline Heller, with the Keter Yerushalayim Award.

Shaare Zedek Trauma Teams Again Called Into Action In Response to Har Nof Terror Attack

Shaare Zedek’s trauma response teams again responded on Tuesday morning, November 18, following a terror attack in the nearby Har Nof neighborhood.

The attack initially claimed the lives of four people (Rabbi Moshe Twersky, Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Goldberg, Rabbi Kalman Levine, and Aryeh Kupinsky) took place at the Kehilat Bnei Torah synagogue on Shimon Agassi St. during morning prayers and involved the use of meat cleavers, knives and guns.  In addition to those killed at the scene, approximately eight others were injured including three who were transferred to Shaare Zedek Medical Center and are being treated at this time for injuries resulting from both stab wounds and gunshots.  That evening, one of the wounded, Master Sergeant Zidan Sif, age 30 from Yanuh-Jat, who joined the Israel Police in April 2011 and served as a traffic control inspector at the Jerusalem Police Department, succumbed to his wounds.  A member of Israel’s Druze community, Sif was posthumously promoted to the rank of First Sergeant.

In addition to those being treated from the general public, a Shaare Zedek physician, Dr. Yitzchak Heshin was directly involved in the incident and lightly injured.  Dr. Heshin, a physician in the hospital’s Oncology Institute, was in the synagogue when the two terrorists burst in and directly approached him.  He was able to dive for cover behind a table before fleeing the scene.  In an interview with Israel Army Radio, Dr. Heshin said that despite his instincts as a doctor to save lives, he realized that the only action that would save his own would be to get as far from the scene as possible.  He eventually made his way to Shaare Zedek where he was treated for light wounds and described the emotional trauma of the more >

Advanced Heart Monitor Implanted at Shaare Zedek

A new and advanced heart monitor, one-tenth the size of the device normally used, was implanted in a patient at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. This monitor can record and broadcast the information gathered for three years and can send immediate, life-saving warnings to their medical team.

The patient who received the device had been fainting and losing consciousness.  Dr. Aharon Medina, Head of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Unit at Shaare Zedek, explained that these episodes can be caused by a number of things, including a congenital problem , an arrhythmia that requires drug therapy or ablation, or ventricular fibrillation, necessitating an immediate blood dilution.  The new device was implanted subcutaneously in the thorax with a special syringe and the operation required only local anesthesia and was completed in a few minutes.
