22,748 Births in 2018, a Record for Israel and Shaare Zedek Medical Center

With the end of 2018, Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center once again established itself as one of the world’s most active maternity hospitals, recording 22,398 deliveries, the most in the hospital’s more than 117-year old history. This number translated to 22,748 babies: 11,671 boys and 11,077 girls including 327 multiple births.
This feat is reflective of the hospital’s continued growth and translates to an average of 61 deliveries in every 24-hour period — a record for any Israeli hospital and believed to be among the most active anywhere in the Western world.
“Over the past decade, the number of babies born in our hospital has doubled and with it the level of satisfaction that parents attribute to their experience at Shaare Zedek,” says Professor Sorina Grisaru-Granovsky, Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Shaare Zedek.  “Mothers come from all the different demographic communities we are blessed to serve and we provide every couple with the chance to experience this critical moment in their lives in a way that works best for them while ensuring the optimal safety and health for mother and child.”
In recent years, Shaare Zedek has opened new maternity facilities including “rooming-in” options, a fourth Mother and Infant Department and a post-partum hotel where mothers benefit from a heightened level of comfort and privacy. “We are proud to offer multiple approaches to pain-reduction including acupuncture as well as traditional approaches provided by our highly trained team of obstetricians and anesthesiologists,” Professor  Grisaru-Granovsky says. “And whenever the couple expresses interest in a ‘natural birth’ we also do our utmost to respect those wishes while ensuring the safest experience for all involved.”

Mother’s Milk Room Dedicated in NICU After Son Sails Atlantic for Shaare Zedek

The Paull family, of the United Kingdom and California, have dedicated a Mother’s Milk Room in Shaare Zedek Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to honor the memory of their late mother, Ruth bat Zvi z”l. Several months ago, one of the brothers, Jonathan, of England, actually sailed from the Canary Islands to the West Indies to raise money for the project. The trip would take most people a little more than 12 hours by air, but his voyage across the Atlantic with a

crew of three — over 2800 nautical miles — took three weeks. With the “Great Atlantic Challenge” behind him, Jonathan, and his brother Gideon, of Northridge, CA, and their families, including their mother’s brother, recently gathered at the NICU for the dedication.

“To save a life is to save the world,” Jonathan shared, and “nowhere is this clearer every day so many times a day then at Shaare Zedek, a hospital not just with a heart but with a soul that makes the world a better place. Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem is a very special place, but until I experienced it first-hand I had little idea of just how incredible and special a hospital can be.”

When their mother arrived at Shaare Zedek in 2013 she had late stage Parkinson’s disease and was suffering from severe pneumonia and complications of Parkinson’s. Jonathan was amazed by the treatment his mother received. “You see, Shaare Zedek treats every patient of whatever age, color or creed from across Israel, the West Bank, Gaza and elsewhere in the Middle East, on the basis that every single life is valuable,” he said. “No distinction is made between the patient who is young with years ahead and one more >
